Dicom and friends on tolerence

After more than two years spending at least part of my day on YouTube, I still find gems of wisdom among my friends and those I subscribe to regularly. I’m thankful to have met so many wonderful and entertaining folks there and this week’s spotlight videographer is no exception. Dicom is a business man, a writer, historian, and social and political commentator whose views are both thoughtful and thought provoking. I’ll also add that he is a fantastic story teller and has a way of “telling it like it is” that is a pure delight!

I’ve selected a series on “tolerence” Dicom added to his channel along with video responses from his viewers to post here for your enjoyment and this series is also in our lineup of video on SizePositiveTV.com. We look forward to more of Dicom’s work and the discussions his videos spark in the future and wish him and his friends the very best in their endeavors.

Please visit and subscribe to Dicom’s channel on YouTube and see more. http://www.youtube.com/user/dicom

Chenese Lewis - Big Beautiful Actress and Activist

YouTube Preview Image\

Miss Plus America Chenese Lewis speaks at the 2007 National NOW Conference about being a woman of size in Hollywood.

I wanted to share this particular video of Chenese speaking frankly about the lack of leading roles for plus size women. I admire women like Chenese who are trying to cut a path for herself and other big actresses to reach their dreams. But after hearing her insights about the same tired stereotypical roles she’s offered, I’m inclined to think it’s time for the size positive screenplay writers to arrive on the scene. Granted, the writers don’t do the casting…otherwise the role of Edna Turnblad in 2007’s film version of Hairspray, would have been played by a lovely fat actress instead of a man (John Travolta) in a fat suit. Just to clarify, Travolta did a decent job in the role, but clearly the role of a fat woman would have been more believable played by a fat woman. This makes me wonder if there is an unwritten rule in Hollywood that fat suits are simply more culturally acceptable than super sized women on the big screen?

I also find it interesting in Chenese’s speech when she talks about the mental and emotional stereotypes of fat women in the eyes of Hollywood. Perhaps it’s just the slap of reality that indeed, the masses believe we are sad and depressed, eating with careless abandon to ease our troubled souls and therefore to blame for our own misery. >insert eyeroll<  The folks who believe this and perpetuate these false ideas need only catch of glimpse of strong plus size women like Chenese to see their stereotypes don’t fit us all. See more videos of Chenese on her YouTube channel http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=cheneselewis or check out her official site http://www.cheneselewis.com/

No blog about size acceptance is complete…

…without a double portion of Joy Nash! Not only has she brought a phenomonal amount of attention to size acceptance but she has taken the lead in busting fat myths with her positive attitude and cleverly informative videos on youtube. Her first video posted to YouTube fittingly titled, “A Fat Rant” is still racking up views. At this writing it has been viewed 1,291,793 times. She is an accomplished actress as well. I’ve been a subscriber of her youtube channel for more than a year and I’m always excited to see more of her work. Entertaining and witty, Joy Nash is the real deal: a plus size woman living her dreams loudly and proudly. I won’t be satisfied until I see this gal with her own TV show.

This is the latest of her “Fat Rants” and one that speaks to so many issues faced by plus size women. I particularly enjoyed this one which features Chenese Lewis, a rising plus size starlet in her own right. I hope we’ll see more dynamic duo projects with these ladies in the near future.

Another of Joy’s projects I thoroughly enjoy is called “The Fruit and the Fly.” Fruit & Fly is a gay themed sketch show co-starring and co-written by Joy Nash and Michael Mullen. It is brilliant and I’m dying to see more! http://www.myspace.com/fruitandfly

Fat and Proud

Many thanks to James for posting these clips for your enjoyment. It is so thrilling to see people of size busting myths and stereotypes for a television audience! I especially enjoyed seeing how these ladies didn’t allow society’s view of fat people stand in the way of their dreams of successes. These clips will also be added to the rotation at www.sizepositivetv.com
